VWS Teams Up with Trading Standards for Rigorous Testing
September 2016

Specialists in the design, manufacture, installation and service of vehicle on-board weighing, bin weighing and axle load protection systems, Vehicle Weighing Solutions Ltd (VWS) is working alongside Derbyshire Trading Standards and raising the bar with its robust testing procedures.

If a VWS customer wishes to use the ENVIROWEIGH bin-weighing system to operate a Pay by Weight system, the system first needs to be approved by Trading Standards to check it meets the UK regulations implementing the EU directive 2014/32/EU.

In conjunction with Derbyshire Trading Standards, VWS has developed a robust and thorough process to test the system’s effectiveness in all conditions, carried out at its purpose-built installation works. The systems are tested by Trading Standards Officers and once a system passes the tests the Authority’s verification marks are applied to the instrument and a certificate issued.

Philip Andrew, Trading Standards Officer, Derbyshire County Council said: “Although the testing and approvals process is independent, VWS has always supported a stringent approach and has worked with us to create a rigorous testing regime, which has made agreeing test methods very straight forward. I am certainly not aware of any other manufacturers who go to the same lengths as VWS.”

To facilitate the testing process VWS has installed a purpose built ramp designed to test the accuracy of the weighing equipment on four planes (or directions) to 8 degrees. The Enviroweigh systems are then tested with various bin weights applying the same error limits as when the vehicle is on level ground.

Julian Glasspole, Managing Director, VWS: “We have been making load cells and building weighing systems for over 30 years, and we are confident that our systems are the best. Testament to this, we have developed a challenging system designed to put our kit through its paces and prove its reliability and accuracy in demanding environments.”

Continued Julian: “Independent verification of our products by Trading Standards ensures the integrity of weighing performance and has delivered genuine benefits in terms of sales, plus they do their best to accommodate our needs to provide a reasonable turn around for our customers which is essential in this competitive market place. ”

VWS was one of the first vehicle weighing companies to comply with the new Whole Vehicle Type Approval regulations, introduced in October 2014, and has received EMC (Electro Magnetic Capability) approval under ECE Regulation 10.4. Essentially this means that body builders can add VWS weighing systems to their vehicles without having to seek WVTA approval.

Philip Andrew continued: “One of our functions is to work with local businesses and VWS is an excellent example of our partnership working. We have a great working relationship and if a customer has an unusual vehicle or requirement, VWS will call us in for our advice before they start installing equipment.”
