Waste Management Cycle Rise Raises Over £40,000 for Charity

On Thursday 12 May a team of 50 waste management professionals set off from the Southern Municipal Exhibition (SME) in Kent to cycle over 200 miles to Ghent in Belgium raising money for charity. 37 cyclists and 9 support team members returned on Sunday 15 May, having completed the challenge in just 3 days and have managed to raise over £40,000 for charity, double the target amount, with donations still rolling in.
Numerous charities will benefit from funds raised including the Alzeihmer’s Society, Sue Ryder, Help for Heroes and Action for Children.
Julian Glasspole, Managing Director of Vehicle Weighing Solutions (VWS), not only helped to organise the event and cycled the full distance, but his company also sponsored shirts and provided support staff.
“We are all blown away by the amount of money that has been raised and also by the time, money and resources given by the companies and individuals involved in the event. A big thank you to the support teams who were awesome, mapping out the routes, keeping us safe and looking after the bikes. It was hard work at times, especially against sometimes strong head winds, but also a huge amount of fun.”
CMS SupaTrak, Epic Media, Scarab Sweepers, Dennis Eagle, Riney, Simply Waste and Collett Transport Services all supported the event by either providing support staff or sponsoring cycle shirts. The event follows on from the success of the 2015 ‘Tower to Tower’ charity cycle ride from the Tower of London to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which also featured many senior figures from the waste sector including Julian.
