Waste on Wheels WOWS with charity challenge success

The 4th industry-wide charity cycle took place last week, in aid of Alzheimer's Society. The team of 30, which included cyclists and support drivers, set off from Vehicle Weighing Solutions in Reading on Tuesday morning and arrived into Weston Super Mare on Thursday afternoon, after travelling 180 miles. The team donned their lycra for 1 last time on Friday morning, as they cycled through Weston Super Mare and into the National Refuse Championships to officially open the event.

The team of cyclists included new riders and veterans to the event from across the waste management and recycling industry. Suppliers and vehicle operators all came together for the challenge and worked together to get to the finishing line.

Trevor Evans, Operations Director at Vehicle Weighing Solutions trained for 9 weeks in preparation for the cycle and during his training, lost 2 stone. Trevor commented that "it's been a great experience and a real challenge. I hadn't been on a bike for years and the Waste on Wheels event got me back in the saddle!"

Trevor has previously taken part in the cycle events as a support driver, along with Marketing Director, Kate Lloyd, who this year drove a support vehicle and co-organised the challenge.

Damien Penman and Richard Marsh, both employees of Vehicle Weighing Solutions also took to the saddle for the challenge this year and completed the route alongside their industry colleagues. Richard has cycled in every event and Damien was cycling for the 3rd time.

The weather conditions were awful throughout the trip, with rain, sleet and high winds battling against them, but the team pushed on through to the end.

A HUGE congratulations to everyone who took part and a big thank you to all the sponsors who supported the team and the challenge.

The donations pages are still open and any support would be greatly received.
